Error 0x something video has no sound

You remember an error beginning with 0x, or dismissed it, and the video now plays without sound.

You do not need to remember the complete code

“0x something” describes a partly remembered Windows error; it is not a specific error code. Several different problems can produce similar wording. Start with the symptom you can recognise, then use the checks below to narrow down the cause.

Identify the file’s codecs Compare codec pack downloads

1. Check whether every file is silent

Play a known-good music file and another video. Check Windows volume mixer, the player mute setting and the selected output device. HDMI, Bluetooth and USB audio can redirect sound to a different endpoint.

2. Inspect the missing audio stream

If only certain videos are silent, inspect their audio codecs. An unsupported AC3, DTS, AAC or other audio stream may explain why the picture works. Check that an audio track exists and select another track if the file provides one.

3. Test decoded stereo audio

In a compatible player, temporarily decode to PCM and use stereo output rather than HDMI/SPDIF passthrough. A TV, receiver or sound device may not accept the original compressed stream or chosen channel layout. Note your original settings before changing them.

4. Choose codec or driver troubleshooting from the result

If other audio plays, focus on the affected file’s codec and player configuration. If all applications are silent, check the audio device connection and official audio driver. Installing more video codecs is unlikely to fix a missing or disabled output device.

Which player showed the error?

Windows Media Player Legacy, the modern Windows Media Player app and MPC-HC use different playback paths. Installed DirectShow filters help compatible players that select them. Some Windows apps use Media Foundation instead, while other players use their own internal decoders. Choose the fix for the application that actually failed.
