Error 0x something cannot play file

Windows showed an error beginning with 0x, followed by numbers you cannot remember, and your video or music file will not play.

You do not need to remember the complete code

“0x something” describes a partly remembered Windows error; it is not a specific error code. Several different problems can produce similar wording. Start with the symptom you can recognise, then use the checks below to narrow down the cause.

Identify the file’s codecs Compare codec pack downloads

1. Check the codec inside the file

The filename alone does not identify the decoder you need. An MP4, MOV or MKV can contain H.264, HEVC, AV1 or another video codec, alongside a separate audio codec. Open the file in the File Inspector and note both streams.

2. Add playback support for a compatible player

If the file is complete and uses a codec your player cannot decode, Media Player Codec Pack can provide playback components for compatible Windows players. Start with Standard unless you need another edition. Close and reopen the player after installing.

3. Compare another player before changing drivers

Try the same file in MPC-HC or another player with suitable internal decoders. If it works there, the original app may use a different playback framework. If several known-good videos fail across players, inspect graphics and audio drivers next.

4. Check whether the file itself is incomplete

Copy it to the local drive, confirm its size against the original, and try another known-good file. A codec installation cannot recover missing file data or unlock protected media.

Which player showed the error?

Windows Media Player Legacy, the modern Windows Media Player app and MPC-HC use different playback paths. Installed DirectShow filters help compatible players that select them. Some Windows apps use Media Foundation instead, while other players use their own internal decoders. Choose the fix for the application that actually failed.
