AMD video engines and media playback

Modern Radeon and Ryzen graphics use dedicated media hardware, commonly described by AMD through its Video Core Next (VCN) generations. The exact media-engine capabilities depend on the graphics architecture and product.

Codec acceleration

Current Radeon families provide hardware acceleration for common media formats such as H.264/AVC, HEVC/H.265 and AV1, with support varying by GPU generation. AMD publishes format tables for integrated, Radeon RX and Radeon PRO graphics; older products can have a different feature set.

  • AMD may publish both a newer Optional package and a WHQL Recommended package. The newest version number is therefore not always the Recommended branch.
  • AMD specifically advises laptop and all-in-one users to consider OEM-provided drivers where system-specific customisations are important.
  • For playback, codec acceleration depends on the exact Radeon/Ryzen graphics generation as well as the installed driver and selected decoder path.

How this relates to Media Player Codec Pack

When AMD/ATI graphics are detected during Detailed Installation, Media Player Codec Pack can recommend known functional acceleration settings instead of assuming a generic GPU. Unsupported hardware decode modes are not required for format support; compatible formats can continue through software decoding when appropriate.

Detected during setupDetailed Installation identifies the graphics vendor and can start from known functional acceleration settings instead of applying the same configuration to every PC.
Software fallback remains availableFormat support and GPU acceleration are separate. A compatible decoder can still use the CPU when the installed GPU cannot accelerate a particular codec, profile, bit depth or resolution.
